Event Title: Willowbrook abuse was exposed
Friday, January 6, 2012
January 6 th , 1969 - Abuse is uncovered at New York's Willowbrook State School, an institution for students with severe physical and mental impairments.
Several local Staten Island newspapers wrote about deplorable conditions for residents of the school, including overcrowding, inadequate sanitary facilities, and physical and sexual abuse of residents by members of the school's staff. These abuses were exposed after it was discovered students were being used for hepatitis studies without the knowledge of their parents. The outcry of parents and elected officials led to broad changes in the way people with intellectual and physical disabilities were cared for, by increasing parent advocacy, mainstreaming students with disabilities, and utilizing community-based supports. The publicity generated by the case was a major contributing factor to the passage of a federal law, called the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act of 1980.

Event Title: Willowbrook State School exposé
Tuesday, January 10, 2012
Willowbrook State School (January 10, 1972 ) was a state-supported institution for children with intellectual disabilities <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_disabilities> located in the Willowbrook <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willowbrook,_Staten_Island> neighborhood of Staten Island <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island> in New York City <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City> from the 1930s until 1987. By 1965, Willowbrook housed over 6,000 mentally disabled children, despite having a maximum capacity of 4,000. Senator Robert Kennedy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kennedy> toured the institution in 1965 and proclaimed that individuals in the overcrowded facility were "living in filth and dirt, their clothing in rags, in rooms less comfortable and cheerful than the cages in which we put animals in a zoo" and offered a series of recommendations for improving conditions. In November 1971, The Staten Island Advance published a series of articles detailing the horrible conditions at the school. Following these articles, on January 10, 1972, Geraldo Rivera, the television reporter, began a series of programs that shook the conscience of New York State and the nation and inspired parents and others to take legal action.

Geraldo Rivera <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geraldo_Rivera>, then an investigative reporter <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investigative_reporter> for WABC-TV <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WABC-TV> in New York City, conducted a series of investigations at Willowbrook uncovering a host of deplorable conditions, including overcrowding, inadequate sanitary facilities, and physical <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_abuse> and sexual <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_abuse> abuse of residents by members of the school's staff. The exposé, entitled Willowbrook: The Last Disgrace, garnered national attention and won a Peabody Award <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peabody_Award> for Rivera. Rivera later appeared on the nationally televised Dick Cavett Show <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Cavett_Show> with film of patients at the school.

NCHV Hosts Teleconference for Developing Homeless Courts
Mon Jan 9, 2012 12:30 pm (PST)

NCHV Hosts Teleconference for Developing Homeless Courts
Thursday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m. EST

In an effort to help homeless veterans reintegrate into their communities, Homeless Court Programs (HCPs) around the country utilize existing self-development programs that can be recognized as sentencing alternatives for homeless veterans with legal barriers to independent living. HCPs combine a progressive plea bargain system, alternative sentencing structure, assurance of "no custody," and proof of program activities to address a full range of misdemeanor offenses. Established HCPs are a testament to the power of collaboration with community-based organizations that provide supportive services to homeless veterans. Understanding the process of HCP development allows additional community organizations to leverage existing relationships to develop this important program to serve homeless veterans with legal barriers to employment and housing.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at 3 p.m. EST, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) will host the teleconference "Developing a Homeless Court in Your Community" to discuss the creation and expansion of HCPs to serve homeless veterans. This teleconference will feature Steve Binder, who founded the nation's first Homeless Court in 1989 and currently serves as Special Assistant to the American Bar Association's Commission on Homelessness and Poverty. Binder will provide a step-by-step strategy for implementation and will relate his own experiences with the program, explaining how it has affected his community.

Muhammad Ali - (born January 17, 1942) was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. He is a former American boxer and three-time World Heavyweight Champion <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heavyweight_boxing_champions>, who is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight championship boxers of all time. As an amateur, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Summer_Olympics> in Rome . After turning professional, he went on to become the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineal_championship> three times. He was also known for his pre-match hype, where he would "trash talk <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trash-talk>" opponents on television and in person some time before the match, often with rhymes. Muhammad Ali used to recite poems before his fights that brashly predicted victory against his ring opponents, but the boxing poet laureate had to overcome dyslexia as a child to learn how to read and write. Originally known as Cassius Clay, Ali changed his name after joining the Nation of Islam <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation_of_Islam> in 1964, subsequently converting to Sunni <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunni_Islam> Islam <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam> in 1975 and more recently to Sufism <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufism>.
These personality quips and idioms, along with an unorthodox fighting technique, made him a cultural icon. In later life, Ali developed Parkinson's disease <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_disease>. In 1999, Ali was crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC>. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali>

Event Title: Bernard J. Carabello's brthday
Thursday, January 19, 2012

Bernard J. Carabello was born on January 19, 1950 in New York City. He was born with cerebral palsy, but was misdiagnosed as being mentally retarded at age three. Doctors urged his mother - who was separated and raising eight other children on welfare - to place Carabello in an institution. Carabello was placed at the Willowbrook State School in 1954, and remained there for 18 years.

In 1972, Dr. Mike Wilkins, a physician at the facility, declared himself Carabello's personal guardian and obtained his legal release from the Willowbrook State School. Soon afterwards, Wilkins was fired from the school. That day, Wilkins arranged for an ABC news reporter, Geraldo Rivera, to expose the conditions at the school and interview Carabello. Rivera's 30-minute piece, The Last Great Disgrace, created a massive reaction of public outrage.
Carabello has since transformed himself into a major force in the movement for self-advocacy in New York and across the nation. He began work to organize a statewide self-advocacy organization and founded the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State in 1986. He continues to advocate for the rights and freedoms of people with disabilities today.

State of the Union address
The State of the Union is an annual address presented by the President of the United States to the United States Congress. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows the president to outline his legislative agenda (for which he needs the cooperation of Congress) and his national priorities.[1]
The practice arises from a command given to the president in the Constitution of the United States:
" He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient. "

- Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution

  • Is employing more technology and fewer people unavoidable?
