Religion Ala Carte

When you start talking about religion you should preface the conversation or discourse with a caveat. So here it goes, I am not a theologian, or even a good student of the Bible. My mother read the bible to me when I was small. She pointed things for me to remember so I would grow up a good Christian. I doubt very much that the Bible has undergone massive revisions, as if a screen play, since I was small.  I am Catholic, or I should say, I was born into a Catholic household. I don‘t practice Catholicism. If you have to practice something, then you obviously don’t know it well enough.. I don’t flaunt my religion either. That is not right. In fact, that to me is “unbecoming a good Christian.”

You see I believe, and was taught, to not discuss what you do in the bathroom, what you do in the bedroom and with whom, and how you follow your religion.

We Catholics feel a sense of superiority to other so-called ‘Christian religions.’  We truly belief we are the true followers of Jesus Chris. Unlike those other Johnny come lately Christians. We know Jesus was not Catholic. He was a Jewish Rabbi, if true need be told. And that’s great!

The protestant revolution, as you know—the rebellion that Martin Luther (and others) lead against the Catholic establishment, was not exactly God blessed. It was an economic upheaval more than a religious one. Hence forth, there were “protestants.” Why  the mere appellations defines what they are, “protesters.”

What is a protestant? One who makes a declaration or avowal. More, a member of a Western Christian church whose faith and practice are founded on the principles of the Reformation, especially in the acceptance of the Bible as the sole source of revelation, in justification by faith alone, and in the universal priesthood of all the believers. What was the Reformation? “The usual term for the religious movement which made its appearance in Western Europe in the sixteenth century, and which, while ostensibly aiming at an internal renewal of the Church, really led to a great revolt against it, and an abandonment of the principal Christian beliefs.” The term Church by which the New Testament writers denote the society founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Reformation, or revolution was caused by the first impulse to secession which was supplied by the opposition of Luther in Germany and of Zwingli in German Switzerland to the promulgation by Leo X of an indulgence for contributions towards the building of the new St. Peter's  at Rome. Can you imagine these so called reformists were against building the very universal symbol of the Church of  Jesus Chris, St. Peter’s at the Vatican.

Was the Church corrupt? Well, let me put it this way, Is the Pope Catholic? But the revolt was against the Church’s taxes.---- In other words, a revolt against the levy of taxes or donations, in exchange for forgiveness of sins. Martin Luther, a product of mixed religious household, inherited his fathers intolerance and anger, and used it to break up the House of Christ. So as we move forward to the 20 Century and the 21 Century, we find the “Protestants,” as a small domination of the Christian faith, still seeking to establish their form of  thinking upon the world. Their current roots are called the “Evangelical Right.” In their zeal to appeal to Jesus Christ, they claim to adhere more closely to the Bible, then anyone else.

This, in all due respect, is “mad ambition, and greed.” Their thirst to impose their religious thinking on others is as mad the as the Vatican sanctioned Crusades, which were expeditions undertaken, in fulfillment of a solemn vow.

Now-a-days, many people want to show that they’re religious. It has become hip to be religious. Unfortunately many become involved in religion for the wrong reasons. Many baby-boomers want to win brownie points before the time comes to “logoff”. Others think It insulate them from harm or evil. Others, because they did all the bad and sinful things they could imagine and now seek salvation. Of the latter group, many of these people are self-righteous ass holes. Not unlike our chief executive. They think they are right, even when everyone else says they are wrong.

If Jesus Christ was a non-violent, peace loving, preacher, who did good for all men and women, why are our modern day religions so---f—up? Why is the Catholic Church trying to hide the sins of pedophile priests? And, equally as bad, why are the Protestants so determined to dominate the world, with their “born again Christian” ideology. Let’s face it. The Protestants are always going to be the”Christians” with the small ‘c’. And the Catholics, the religion without walls.

Religion, not just in America, but world wide, is being observed as if it were a Chinese menu. I will adhere to two from the column A, and two from the column B. In others words, were deciding to follow Religion Ala Cart. Both the Catholics and Protestants. Unlike the bylaws of a local club or fraternal society, the principles of religion are not to be amended. They are to be adhered to. Let’s study this phenomenon of disconnect.

President Church Bush said “.that God told him to go to war in Iraq.” This offends me profoundly, since God does not believe in War. All “evangelicals”, Catholics or Protestants, know Jesus Christ was against killing. So they oppose abortion. Rightfully so. But they are for Capital punishment, sanctioned killing by the State.

More to come.
